What is the right food for Valentine’s Day? Does it have to be expensive seafood or foods that are thought to have aphrodisiac properties like chocolate, chilli, oysters, avocado, asparagus or strawberries. Who likes all of these things anyway?

I certainly don’t!!

Surely if your desire is to spend quality time with a loved one and create a romantic atmosphere, your goal should be to provide food that you both love to eat. You might also want to consider how much effort is involved in making that food – you don’t want to spend all night in the kitchen!

So if you want to avoid the cost of a fancy restaurant on Valentine’s Day but want your food to be just right for you and easy to make, you need to plan ahead. And it is not that difficult to add a few ingredients to spice up your time together!

We have some ideas for tasty meals and a few treats that won’t take lots of effort to make.

1. Beef Wellington: There are many versions of this recipe available and normally this is served for a crowd. When I make it I prepare individual portions which are quick to prepare, cook and serve. Check out the recipe here.

2. Lamb Shanks in Red Wine and Chilli: This will take all day to cook but with little effort from you and the mouth watering aroma will tempt you all day! Here is our recipe. Add the chilli to spice up your meal!

3. Honey Glazed Chicken: This recipe is really quick and tasty – particularly if you start with a BBQ chicken from the supermarket. Check out our recipe for this here. Serve with Smashed potatoes and a green salad and you have a perfect meal for two! Add some smashed avocado to your salad for a richer meal.

4. Kiss Cakes with Strawberry Jam: These are a bit of fun but in all honesty, they just melt in your mouth and if you ‘kiss’ the cakes with strawberry jam and add a dollop of whipped cream on the side you will have a delightful after dinner treat! Check out the recipe here.

5. Creamy Rum Ice Cream: This is a very versatile recipe in that you can add any rich alcohol you like to suit the occasion?  If you don’t like rum, add creme de menthe or a chocolate liqueur. It is worth a try and you can make it ahead of time. You can serve it with strawberries or other fruit as you prefer. Check out the recipe here.

We hope these ideas have inspired you.

Enjoy!
