It would be easy to spend hundreds of dollars each year for beauty products wouldn’t it? There are so many different brands, products etc. and we are told by the marketing people that we need them all.
But what do we really need each day? I have fairly simple needs – I need a moisturiser for my face and something to help remove eyeliner i.e. a make up remover. In the winter I need a body lotion and I need hand soap and body wash and shampoo each day.
My question to you is – do you know what you are buying and what the products are made of?
Most commercial beauty products include fragrances, preservatives and complex chemicals that will allow the product to have a long shelf life and to smell lovely. Have you ever thought about what all those chemicals are doing to your body?
There is a way to simplify this. You can be clean, smell nice and reduce the toxic chemicals you are exposed to by making your own products using Essential Oils.
The following oils are beneficial for your skin and can be used in a range of products.
Lavender
Lavender Oil’s primary chemical constituents are linalool, linalyl acetate, and ocimene. Lavender Oil is so versatile that it is a go to oil for so many things that need calming. It can be used to calm the stomach, soothe the skin, calm the nerves etc. Lavender has been used for centuries in beauty products in lavender water, in baths and in creams and ointments.
Geranium
Geranium Oil’s primary chemical constituents are citronellol, citronellyl formate and geraniol.
Geranium is used in beauty products for its floral scent but also to promote healthy-looking hair and skin
Patchouli
Patchouli Oil’s primary chemical constituents are Patchoulol, α-Bulnesene and α-Guaiene. This oil has a grounding effect on emotions but it is also used in skin care products for a smooth and glowing complexion.
Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang Oil’s primary chemical constituents are germacrene, caryophyllene and Farnesene. This oil has a powerful aroma and is commonly used in perfumes. It can be used for its calming effect and is beneficial for hair health and skin health.
Lemon Eucalyptus
The primary chemical constituents of Lemon Eucalyptus oil are citronellal and citronellol. It is great for cleaning surfaces and cleaning skin as well as for repelling insects and clearing the air.
More Expensive Essential Oils
The more expensive oils for beauty are Frankincense and Myrrh. These can be used in creams and serums. doTERRA make a wonderful blend that can be used on your face. I include it in my DIY Face Cream for that touch of luxury.
How I use these oils
Perfume
It is easy to make a perfume from oils. Just add about 30 drops to a Roller Ball Bottle and top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Just roll on your pulse points. Freshen up every few hours. Or you can roll your ‘perfume’ onto a diffuser bracelet and enjoy the lovely fragrance for hours. You can also apply the Essential Oil directly to a diffuser necklace. Mine came with different coloured felt inserts. I try to colour code my ‘perfumes’. For example, if I feel like Lavender lift I use the pink felt. If you like Patchouli, it blends well with Lavender.
Face Cream
I make my own face cream and use a range of oils in the cream, including Lavender and Frankincense. Check out our recipe for this.
Body Lotion
I use a doTERRA lotion as a body lotion. It is odourless so I can add a drop of any oil to my palm and mix with the lotion for a full body lift! A word of caution, don’t use citrus oils in this way as they can increase your sensitivity to sunlight and you may end up with severe sunburn. One exception is Green Mandarin. This is one of my favourite citrus oils and is very uplifting when used to moisturise arms and neck.
Body Wash
I make my own body wash. Take a look at our recipe for this – it is very easy to make. My favourite oil for a body wash is Lemon Eucalyptus. It is a strong smelling oil and gives you a boost with all that steam in the shower.
Make up Remover
I use Lavender in my make up remover gel. Try our recipe for this. You can also use Geranium oil for this purpose.
Bath Salts
Imagine a relaxing hot lavender bath with a hint of Ylang Ylang or Patchouli? You can make your own bath salts with Epsom salts and your choice of Essential Oil. Here is our recipe to try.
Our message in this post is that it is easy to make your own beauty products using simple ingredients and Essential Oils. Using natural substances will do wonders for your body and you will notice the difference as you remove the artificial and potentially harmful chemicals from your household!
