I have to say that Mother’s Day is not a big thing in our house. The attitude has always been that it is another excuse for commercial exploitation of consumers – and in all reality that’s what it is for most people.
But, it doesn’t have to be that way. A gathering of the family around the table (or in times of social distancing, around the computer screen) is all that it takes. A lovingly cooked meal (may have to be pot luck if its a virtual meal) and good company is surely all that it takes to say thanks to your mother? If it isn’t enough then perhaps you could make something special.
This post might give you some DIY gift ideas that will not cost a bomb and will come straight from the heart. After all, it is not the cost or even the glamour of a gift that counts, it is the thought. Our gifts all incorporate some special ‘loving’ Essential Oils!
* Before I go on I just want to let you know that I have added some links to my doTERRA webpage throughout this post so you can check out any of the oils I mention.
Mother’s Day DIY Gift Ideas
What are the Essential Oils that express love? There are quite a few but some of them are quite rare and expensive. The first one that comes to mind is Rose, but this is such a precious commodity that it is difficult to purchase the pure oil. (If you really love Rose, doTERRA offer it as a roll on product combined with coconut oil. You can find this product on my doTERRA website.)
But there are some more affordable and accessible oils that are lovely – some are very feminine and some are just wonderful, rich and relaxing oils. These oils include Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium, Clary Sage and Sandalwood. Other oils you might like to consider include Ginger and Black Pepper. We make suggestions for the use of these oils in the recipes and ideas mentioned below.
1. DIY Scented Bath Salts: We have a wonderfully simple recipe for bath salts that you might like to try. We provided a few suggestions for oils in that recipe. But why not mix it up a bit, for example, use Patchouli, Sandalwood and Frankincense for a truly indulgent experience!
Of course packaging is also important and a way to make your gift that extra bit special. You could use a heart shaped box or jar to package up your bath salts.
2. Melt and Pour Soap: It is so easy to make soap for every occasion with a melt and pour soap base. I use a Goat’s Milk base because it provides a nourishing and creamy soap base that goes well with Essential Oils and a range of botanicals such as dried rose petals or lavender sprigs. I would use a blend of Patchouli and Ginger for Mother’s Day. Or perhaps you might prefer Ylang Ylang?
You can also colour the soap using natural mica. I have a range of silicone moulds that can be used for soap making – the heart and flower shapes shown below would be fantastic for Mother’s Day! This is a fun gift for children to make also – although they will need supervision. Check our recipe for this soap here.
3. Perfume: Making perfume with Essential Oils is as simple as diluting an Oil with a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond or Fractionated Coconut Oil in a roller ball bottle or a bottle with a dropper. You can also add rose petals to add colour! Try using 20-30 drops of Oil and filling the bottle with your chosen carrier oil. Ylang Ylang on its own is delightful as is Patchouli. Or you could blend Bergamot ( 10-15 drops), Frankincense and Clary Sage (5 drops)!
4. Massage Oil: Using a carrier oil of your choice e.g. Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil, create your own fragrant massage oil. Sandalwood oil is a wonderful choice. It is an expensive oil but it is very strong and can be diluted for use as a massage oil. Dilute approximately 5-10 drops of Sandalwood Oil with a carrier oil in a 25 mL bottle.
5. Diffuser Blends: You can create a perfect diffuser blend for your mum. The blends below are for direct use in your diffuser. However, you could also mix up 10 or 20 X the volume and place in a dropper bottle with a pretty label. These would make a simple but lovely gift for mum!
Try these blends:
It’s Time to Chill!
5 drops patchouli
4 drops ginger
4 drops cardamom
3 drops black pepper
1 drop cedarwood
Thank’s Mum!
4 drops black pepper
4 drops sandalwood
3 drops peppermint
2 drops pink pepper
1 drop cinnamon
Happy Mum!
3 drops bergamot
3 drops geranium
3 drops clary sage
3 drops sandalwood
