What oil should I use for Sleep Problems?

We all have problems with sleep from time to time, particularly when we are stressed, in pain or our brains are working in overdrive. And of course, if you have a cold you may need to open your airways to enable you to breathe when you are lying down.

There are a number of Essential Oils that you can use at night to help you sleep. Here are a few oils for you to use.

Lavender

What oil should I use for Sleep Problems? 1

Lavender Oil’s primary chemical constituents are linalool, linalyl acetate, and ocimene. Lavender Oil is so versatile that it is a go to oil for so many things that need calming. It can be used to calm the stomach, soothe the skin, calm the nerves etc. Of course, this also means that it is perfect to calm the senses when you want to rest or sleep.

I diffuse Lavender Oil in a blend of oils every night and keep a Roller Ball Bottle handy at all times. I dilute about 20 drops of Lavender Oil with Fractionated Coconut oil in the bottle and roll it on my temples and wrists when needed. You can roll it onto your pillow and sheets too. For children, try running the ball down the spine of the child or on the balls of the feet.

Lavender Oil can also be taken internally in an empty capsule or added to cooking. It provides a unique flavour to desserts such as ice cream and baked goods.

Alternatives: Clary Sage

Bergamot

Bergamot Oil’s primary chemical constituents are Limonene, linalyl acetate, linalool, terpinene and β-pinene.

Bergamot is from the citrus family and its properties are unique in that it can be both calming and uplifting. If your mood needs a lift you should try a drop of Bergamot on your palm, rub your hands together and breathe it in deeply!

For sleep, apply before going to bed. The oil can be used on its own or can be included into your night-time blend of oils, either in a Roller Ball Bottle or in your diffuser.

Alternatives: Petigrain

Cedarwood

Cedarwood Oil’s primary chemical constituents are α-cedrene, cedrol and thujopsene. This Oil is commonly used as a massage oil because it evokes a sense of emotional wellbeing and it is grounding.

I use Cedarwood Oil together with Lavender in my diffuser each night. (I will provide the blend details at the end of this post.)

Alternatives: Sandalwood Oil

Vetiver

Alternatives: Sweet Marjoram

Oils that will help with your breathing include:

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Oil’s primary chemical constituents are eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol. This oil is well known to assist with clear breathing and to open airways. It can also help release tension.

A few drops in the diffuser before bed will help clear your nose. I also add a few drops to a bowl, add in some almost boiling water and inhale for a few minutes. This can be intense but it does clear the airways.

I have also dropped some oil on the floor of the shower so I can inhale the steam. Just remember to turn off your exhaust fan when you do this. If you don’t turn off the fan, the steam will clear too quickly!!

Peppermint

Peppermint Oil’s primary chemical constituents are menthol, menthone and eucalyptol. This oil is excellent for opening airways. It can wake you up too so don’t apply topically to your nose before bed. Add it to your diffuser blend to help with breathing.

doTERRA make a blend for sleep and a blend for opening the airways. These blends are excellent!
