Some of the things that I love about making my own household products is that I don’t have to carry heavy bottles and boxes home from the supermarket and that in most cases I am saving a lot of money because the ingredients I use are cheap and readily available.
Of course the other benefit is that I know exactly what ingredients are going into my cleaning products – I want simple products that do the job!
This recipe is great because it ticks all of these boxes i.e. less heavy lifting, a product that lasts for weeks and simple ingredients that are cheap to buy. You might like to check out our post on sourcing DIY ingredients.
What you will need:
2 cups washing soda
2 cups borax
1.5 cups very fine or milled salt
1.5 cups grated Castile soap
1/4 cup sodium bicarbonate
30-40 drops of Essential Oils (Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus Oil are excellent choices.)
Method:
Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Drop in the oils and mix well until the individual ingredients are well combined.
Storage:
Store in glass jars.
This quantity of washing powder lasts us for about two months.
We wash every day but usually only a medium load.
This should give you an idea of how long it will last for you.
You can always make double the recipe!
Just find a bigger bowl for mixing and a few extra jars for storage.
We use large Moccona Coffee Jars to store our powder.
Use:
Add 2 tablespoons of powder to a medium – large load of washing. Use an extra tablespoon for extra large loads.
