Essential Oils for Aches and Pains

We all have aches and pains at times and need something to take the edge off. It’s so easy to reach for the painkiller or if the problem is muscular, the heat rub or the anti-inflammatory gel. I actually used paracetamol and quite powerful anti -inflammatory drugs for years as I had a dicky knee that caused me a great deal of trouble. But almost 5 years ago I had a partial knee replacement and had to stop my meds for about 6 weeks before the operation. After the first few days I found that I didn’t miss them at all. My guess was that I thought I needed them and so took them ‘just in case’. I haven’t used the strong drugs since my operation, although I continued to take paracetamol from time to time.

Although my knee is good these days, I have other aches and pains in my hip and ankle – I really don’t like getting old!! I try to manage these new aches through swimming and yoga but there are times when I need a bit of help, e.g. when I can’t sleep because of the pain.

Since I started working with Essential Oils I found that I have quite a few natural pain remedies at my fingertips. A number of oils can be used to help manage pain and other oils can help to soothe muscles. I have a recipe that I will share now.

If you would prefer to do your own research on pain management it would be a good idea for you to look up each of the oils and check out their properties or search for oils to help with pain. Whenever I do this I find half a dozen websites where oils are recommended and there will be a pattern or a cross over of ideas. I then take the most common list of oils and work out which ones I have and make do with those. In other words, you can take a trial and error approach to this, within reason – you obviously need to stick with oils that have the properties you need to suit your purpose!!

For this mix I have chosen soothing and pain relieving oils, including the soothing blue blend. Using this blend on its own is also very effective if you don’t have the other oils.

Regardless of the oils you choose, you will also need a carrier oil for dilution. This helps your precious oils go further and protects your skin. Some people can be sensitive to the full strength oils. You can read more about dilution here.

You will need:

Frankincense

Lemongrass

Copaiba

soothing blue blend

Fractionated Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil

A Roller Ball Bottle (10mL)

Method:

Add 10 drops each of the Frankincense and Lemongrass to the bottle.

Add 15 drops each of the Copaiba and Soothing Blue blend to the bottle.

Fill the bottle with the chosen carrier oils.

Fit the Roller Ball to the top of the bottle along with the lid.

Label your bottle. If you have stickers with the names of the oils add them to the outside of the bottle. Otherwise you can just use a small sticky label and write the names on that.

To Use:

Roll a small amount of your mixture on your sore muscles and massage in.
