Essential Oils can be used to reduce inflammation and pain in the body. It is amazing how many oils have anti inflammatory properties. This is great for you if you have some Essential Oils at home because it means that when part of your body is aching, swollen and in pain you are likely to have something on hand to help you.
Most of oils below are commonly used Essential Oils and worth having around for many purposes!!
Lavender
Lavender Oil’s primary chemical constituents are linalool, linalyl acetate and ocimene. Lavender Oil is so versatile that it is a go to oil for so many things that need calming. It can be used to calm the stomach, soothe the skin and calm the nerves etc. Of course, this also means that it is perfect to calm the senses when you want to rest or sleep or if you have a headache. Diffusing Lavender when you have a headache is a relaxing and soothing experience!
Lavender Oil can also be taken internally in an empty capsule to soothe the stomach.
Alternative: Clary Sage or Rosemary
Peppermint
Peppermint Oil’s primary chemical constituents are menthol, menthone and eucalyptol. This oil is excellent for opening airways. It is energizing, stimulating and awakens the nerves and the brain. This is really helpful when you need to focus on your work. I rub this on my temples every morning to help wake myself up, and keep the roller ball bottle handy on days when I have a headache. Mixed with Lavender, Peppermint will help you tackle that nagging pain in the temples.
Alternative: Spearmint.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus Oil’s primary chemical constituents are eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol. This oil can promote the feeling of calmness and if used with a massage oil or cream can reduce tension in the muscles.
Alternative: Rosemary
Lemongrass
Lemongrass Oil’s primary chemical constituents are Geranial and neral. Lemongrass is a very versatile oil but one of my favourite uses for it is to soothe tired and inflamed muscles. This oil can promote the feeling of calmness and if used with a massage oil or cream can reduce tension in the muscles.
Alternative: Ginger
Rosemary
Rosemary Oil’s primary chemical constituents are 1, 8-Cineole, α-pinene and camphor. This oil can promote the feeling of calmness and if used with a massage oil or cream can reduce tension in the muscles.
Alternative: Eucalyptus
Ginger
Ginger Oil’s primary chemical constituents are a-zingiberene and sesquiphellandrene. This oil can promote the feeling of calmness and if used with a massage oil or cream can reduce tension in the muscles. It is also well known as the oil to take for upset stomachs! You can also add Ginger to your lotions and ointments for massage or drink as a tea ( 1 drop in a cup of hot water) or in a capsule.
Alternative: Lemongrass
Copaiba
Copaiba Oil’s primary chemical constituent is β-caryophyllene. This oil is thought to support the health of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive and nervous systems, and also helps support a healthy inflammatory response.
You can take a drop of this oil under the tongue morning and night or in a capsule to promote a healthy immune system and to help combat chronic pain. I add it to body lotions and magnesium cream to help reduce muscle inflammation.
More Expensive Oils
There are a few more expensive oils that you can try to reduce inflammation including Roman Chamomile and Sandalwood. I do use these oils from time to time but blend them with Lavender and dilute with Fractionated Coconut Oil. They are soothing to the muscles.
doTERRA make several blends that will help you with pain and inflammation. If it is sore or tired muscles you need help with try this blend. If it is help with headaches, try this blend.
