What oil should I use for cleaning? 3

One of the first things I researched when starting to use Essential Oils was how I could use them in my home for cleaning purposes.

It didn’t take me long to find that I can use many oils for cleaning. I have developed some preferences and so I thought I would share them here to make it easy for you too!

Lemon

What oil should I use for cleaning?

The primary chemical constituents of Lemon Oil are Limonene, β-pinene and γ-terpinene. Lemon oil is known for its cleansing and purifying properties. This means it can be used for a wide range of cleaning purposes in your home.

  • For simple cleaning all over your house add 30 drops of Lemon Oil to a 300 mL spray bottle and fill with water or a blend of vinegar and water (50-50). Shake before spraying onto surfaces, wipe off and enjoy the wonderful aroma of lemon! Some people don’t like the vinegar smell so use water if that’s you!
  • A few drops of Lemon Oil diluted with a carrier oil such as olive oil can be used to clean your wooden furniture.
  • If you wish to make your own dishwasher tablets, add Lemon Oil to the mix.
  • Diffuse Lemon Oil in your house to clean the air.
  • Add Lemon Oil to the sink to help with cleaning the dishes.

 Lemon Eucalyptus

The primary chemical constituents of Lemon Eucalyptus are citronellal and citronellol.  It is great for cleaning surfaces.

You can use this oil just as you might use Lemon oil for cleaning.

I personally think that this is the strongest Essential Oil I have tried and so a little goes a long way i.e. you may only need 20 drops in your spray bottle.

Tea Tree

The primary chemical constituents of Tea Tree are terpinen-4-ol, γ-terpinene and α-terpinene.

It is great for cleaning the air and surfaces. I add 20 drops of Tea Tree Oil to my Lemon Oil spray bottle from time to time, particularly if there is sickness in the house. The Tea Tree has known antimicrobial properties so can be used to make sure surfaces are sanitised.

Clove
