Making melt and pour soap is fun and so easy to do. Homemade soap is a great gift for lots of different occasions- especially for Mother’s Day!
I use a goat’s milk base that is creamy and easy to work with. You can add different oils and botanicals to the soap as well as different colours to make the final product interesting and unique.
This recipe will make around 6-8 soaps – but this will vary according to the size of your soap moulds. The flower moulds below produce a larger cake that you might use in the shower where as the heart shapes make a small soap suitable for hand washing.
What you will need:
150 grams melt and pour soap base
20 grams olive oil or grapeseed oil
Essential Oils: Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint are all good oils to use
Botanicals such as dried rose petals or lavender
Seeds or oats (added as exfoliants)
Mica Colours
A microwave, double boiler or a Thermomix to melt the soap
Silicone soap moulds
Vodka in a spray bottle
Method:
Place the botanicals or seeds etc. in each of the soap moulds as desired.
Melt the soap until it becomes liquid. If using a microwave, heat on a medium heat in 30 sec bursts, stirring after each burst. If using a Thermomix heat at 80 C for about 8 minutes, on Speed 2. If using a double boiler, stir the mix as it melts.
Add the oil to the melted soap and mix in well.
Cool for 1 minute and add the Essential Oils and mica. Mix well.
Make sure your moulds are on a hard surface that can be moved without disturbing the soap e.g. a solid cutting board.
Working quickly, pour the mixture into the soap moulds.
Spray over each soap with the vodka. This will help reduce bubbles forming.
Place the soaps into the refrigerator or freezer until set – I leave mine for about an hour in the freezer.
Pop out of the moulds and the soap is ready for use!
